21st Century women’s suff-rage

“On August 26, 1920 the federal government of the United States ratified the 19th Amendment, securing voting rights for women. From 2006 - 2011 I created multiple series of works under the title 21st Century Women’s SuffRage. Using the signs and symbols of women’s biology, such as the uterus, ovary and fallopian tube I created drawings, sculptures and “functional” pottery. During this time I used my studio practice as a way to make sense of complex emotions about my identity as a woman. This was also a way for me to process systemic inequity surrounding women’s civil rights. While the works below were created in the “past”, they continue to influence the way I work and no doubt will resurface in the not so distant future. In the meantime I am creating anti-ephemera in the form of ceramic cups to support women’s suffRage in the 21st century.”
