CU Empty Bowls project
The CU Empty Bowls Project is an extension of Amy’s love of pottery, food, and teaching. An international program, Empty Bowls began in 1990 at a high school in Michigan. The premise was simple; make some bowls, sell them to the faculty and staff, and raise money for a local food drive. Since 1990, Empty Bowls has sparked community action across the globe, raising millions of dollars for hunger relief worldwide.
Since 2006 there have been eight, highly successful public events for the CU Empty Bowls Project, raising over $70,000 to aid hunger relief in the Omaha area. Even after 16 years Amy is still amazed at how effortlessly and enthusiastically Creighton students dedicate their time and creative energy to something they are “giving away”.
The proceeds from every bowl sold during the CU Empty Bowls Project goes directly to the Siena/Francis House of Omaha. And every bowl serves as a reminder that even the smallest efforts can support positive social change.
“Without a doubt this experience has influenced me in countless ways. I have spent hundreds of hours discussing the subtle nuances of designing pottery, the joy of eating, and the importance of service and civic engagement with my students. On many levels my current practice is a direct result of my experience in the classroom.”
