artist as activist: service

Service has a variety of meanings. It is an act of helping or providing assistance, it is a system of supplying a public need, and it is set of dishes used for mealtime.

Through a creative partnership with The Union for Contemporary Art, along with ceramic artists and social entrepreneurs Tracy Shell and Jess Ross, Amy hosted a collaborative clay workshop for teens in The Union’s Co-op Clay Studio.

During the two-week workshop all participants worked together in the studio to create serving dishes for The Union’s Garden Party, which was held in the Abundance Garden on August 11, 2018. In addition to creating in the studio, the workshop also included daily lunches focusing on healthy choices, a day devoted to cooking with Omaha chef Obed Sanchez, a presentation by food activist Dawaune Hayes, seed bomb making with Union Deputy Director Paige Reitz, and a T-shirt screen-printing session.

“Eating together was the most rewarding aspect of the entire project. Everyone agreed that sharing meals was a vital component to unifying the workshop.”
